Special issue: Natural Language Processing and its Applications

چکیده
This study addresses the lexical representation of French VN and Swedish NV-are agentive nominal compounds. The objective is to examine their semantic structure and output meaning. The analysis shows that, as a result of their semantic structure, the compounds group into some major output meanings. Most frequently, the N constituent corresponds to an Undergoer in the argument structure of the V constituent, and the compound displays an Actor role, which more precisely denote entities such as Persons, Animals, Plants, Impersonals, Instruments or Locatives, specified in the Telic role in the Qualia. We propose that the Agentive role can be left unspecified with regard to action modality. In conclusion, our study proposes a unified semantic account of the French and Swedish compounds, which can have applications for NLP systems, particularly for disambiguation and machine translation tasks.

Note from the Editor: Special issue on speech processing and soft computing
This special issue of the Journal is devoted to the work of twelve eminent speech scientists who apply novel soft computing methods to address some of the most difficult and persistent problems facing speech recognition systems today. I first heard these scientists discuss their innovative soft computing algorithms at the University of Salamanca where the Sixth International Conference on Soft ...
متن کاملIntroduction to the Special Issue on Cross-Language Algorithms and Applications
With the increasingly global nature of our everyday interactions, the need for multilingual technologies to support efficient and effective information access and communication cannot be overemphasized. Computational modeling of language has been the focus of Natural Language Processing, a subdiscipline of Artificial Intelligence. One of the current challenges for this discipline is to design m...
متن کاملIntroduction to the Special Issue on PACLING'97
The use of language is a fundamental capability of human intelligence and has been studied in various research fields. Among these fields, natural language processing focuses on computational mechanisms for understanding and processing natural languages, with an emphasis on practical applications. Some research results, such as word processing and machine translation systems, are now being acti...

Recognizing Textual Entailment (RTE) is a new research issue in natural language processing (NLP) research area. RTE can be a useful component in many NLP applications. In this paper, we introduce our finding on the entailment analysis of the NTCIR-10 RITE-2 dataset, and use the observation to improve our system. In the previous works, all the input pairs are treated equally in a standard class...
متن کاملParsing Morphologically Rich Languages: Introduction to the Special Issue
Parsing is a key task in natural language processing. It involves predicting, for each natural language sentence, an abstract representation of the grammatical entities in the sentence and the relations between these entities. This representation provides an interface to compositional semantics and to the notions of “who did what to whom.” The last two decades have seen great advances in parsin...
